Underwater Lighting

Here is how this works in practice. We give underwater lighting and the pro crews to run it for shoots filming below the surface in Croatia. Water absorbs light and colour fast with depth, so even the exceptionally clear Adriatic needs supplementary lighting to restore the reds and warm tones that disappear underwater and to shape a scene the way a DP intends. Our crews work with sealed underwater fixtures, manage the rigging and buoyancy of lights on the dive, and set up power and safety with the underwater camera unit.

Our underwater lighting technicians plan the setup with the DP, balance artificial and ambient light, and deliver the steady, controllable lighting that submerged cinematography needs.

Here is the breakdown. Underwater lighting work in Croatia is carried out by qualified diving technicians under the same careful safety standards as the rest of the underwater unit, with specific care inside covered marine zones such as Mljet National Park and the Kornati archipelago, where filming permits are set up through HAVC and the regional film commissions. HAVC, the Croatian Audiovisual Centre, administers the 'Filming in Croatia' 25% cash rebates. This extends to underwater service shoots qualifying on local spend.

Here is what that looks like on the ground. The prime underwater season runs from late spring through autumn, when the Adriatic is warmest and calmest, and our crews schedule dive days around sea state and the bura wind. We carry the diving and gear insurance that shoots need. We handle the logistics of moving underwater lighting and power packages between island and freshwater locations.
